“Academic Writing: a Tool for Professional Growth”

Who is the course for?
Teachers of English or students at teacher training colleges who want to gain an insight into English for Academic Purposes.
Puntaje docente will be granted. Duration: 63 hours
From April 1 through July 1, 2006
Thirteen face-to-face meetings
Saturdays, from 10:00am to 1.00pm
At: Universidad Caece, Junín 516, Ciudad de Buenos Aires.
Cost: $ 80.- per month, 3 payments Total cost: $ 240.-
Contents:
- Teaching academic writing. Correction of written assignments and how to give positive feeback.
- Rethorical elements in texts. Presenting arguments.
- Citing sources.
- Process writing: pre-writing, planning, first drafts, correction, edition.
- The difference between language and literacy and their relationship with the author's identity.
- Writing and identity. The importance of the academic community – myths and mistaken beliefs.
Main activities
- Critical reading comprehension.
- Paraphrasing and register change.
- Writing: main ideas, summaries and content maps.
- How to search the Web for reliable sources.
- Identifying arguments in favour or against a given stance.
- Text production. Opinion texts.
Evaluation: Participants will compile a portfolio, which will be evaluated jointly with the tutor.
